Pelfrey digs the hole, the offense can't quite dig out of it, and that's your 8th consecutive loss at Target Field.

Mike Pelfrey has at times looked like an interesting possibility for a Twins rotation that is nothing but question marks heading into 2014. And then there are times like tonight, when he's looked like Kevin Correia's plodding twin. Pelfrey got knocked around, allowing six runs in the first four innings as the Twins went on to a 6-5 defeat at the hand of Canadian baseball team the Toronto Blue Jays.

The teams traded runs in the first two innings, with the BJs opening the scoring with an Edwin Encarnacion sac fly and the Twins countering with a seeing-eye Chris Colabello single. Toronto proceeded to tee off on Pelfrey in the third, bunching three singles, two doubles and walk into a 5-run inning (a crooked number, in baseball parlance). Pelfrey did manage to eke out six innings without more damage done, but still.

Colabello helped make it interesting in the 7th, pulling a 2-run dong to make the score 6-3. He almost made it super interesting in the 8th, when he struck out with two men on after a Trevor Plouffe RBI single had narrowed the BJs' lead to two.

Josmil Pinto made it a 1-run game by creaming his first major league home run over the 411-foot sign in center to lead off the 9th. The Twins would get no closer, as the game ended on a strike 'em out/throw 'em out double play (baseball terms). Oh well. Better draft pick, huh?

The Twins return home to take on Toronto, against whom they are roughly 3-198 against in the past few years.

Probables (all games FSN)

Tonight, 7:10 pm: Mike Pelfrey vs. R.A. Dickey

Saturday, 6:10pm: Kevin Correia vs. J.A. Happ

Sunday, 1:10pm: Andrew Albers vs.<strike> E.A Rogers</strike> Esmil Rogers

Jays Notes

Jose Bautista will not play the rest of the season, which is good, good news for the Twins. In 144 career plate appearances against the Twins, he is batting .333 / .413 / .849 - far and away his best numbers against any team. He's also hit 19 home runs against Minnesota, tied for second with Tampa (but in 318 PA) and behind Boston (25, but in 320 PA).

Look out for reliever Jeremy Jeffress, who can hit 100 mph on the radar gun, but can't necessarily hit the catcher. Those guys are always fun. Remember Mike MacDougal on the Royals? He was fun.

Ricky Romero thinks that his problems are behind him, which is pretty big talk for a guy who was an All-Star in 2011 but had a 5.78 ERA in pretty much a full season at Triple-A this year.

Twins Notes

You can see Joe Mauer talk about his recovery from his concussion here, filmed by LEN3, who managed to make it look like Mauer was possessed by the demon ghost of Mike Redmond.

Phil Miller thinks that Josmil Pinto is basically a poor man's Wilson Ramos. (Bill Smith is making some trade calls.)

The Twins bullpen has thrown the most innings in baseball, and has the league's fifth-best ERA in doing so. (Imagine if they'd been as terrible as we thought they might be. The Twins would have lost 120 games this year.)
